Christian Lacroix Heart Brooch — Hammered Gold-Tone, 1990s
Christian Lacroix opened his couture house in 1987 with the conviction that fashion had forgotten how to be excessive in the right way. Not excessive as vulgarity. Excessive as joy, as devotion, as the baroque visual language of Provence where he grew up, a culture that treated ornament as sincerity rather than display.
The heart appeared in his earliest collections and remained one of his most persistent motifs.
This brooch expresses that vocabulary in concentrated form.
An oversized heart rendered in hammered gold-tone metal, the entire surface worked by hand to create subtle depth and light variation across the form. Ten volute terminals radiate from the perimeter in sculptural scrollwork recalling the ironwork and ecclesiastical ornament of southern French architecture.
At the center sits a raised double-heart motif, a heart nested inside a heart, which reads equally as romantic symbol or devotional object. For Lacroix those meanings were never separate.
The hammered surface is the detail that matters most. Early Lacroix jewelry was produced with craft standards that mirrored the ambitions of the couture house itself. Surfaces were hand-worked rather than machine stamped, producing irregular light variation and genuine sculptural mass.
Over time the recessed areas of the hammered surface develop a warm patina that deepens the object rather than diminishing it. The metal was intended to age.
Lacroix’s house filed for bankruptcy protection in 2009 after years of financial difficulty. What disappeared was not the name but the conditions that produced the early jewelry. The pieces created during the first couture years were made by a designer who believed he was building a permanent house.
These hearts were not trend objects. They were statements of identity.
The house is gone.
The heart remains.
