Gianni Versace Medusa Coin and Greek Key Drop Clip Earrings Circa early 1990s
A drop earring that is essentially a condensed glossary of the Versace house vocabulary: Medusa at the top, Greek key at the center, Medusa again at the bottom — the two faces of the gorgon bracketing a rectangular Greek key link, the whole thing connected by double-loop hardware in warm gold-tone metal.
Versace's use of Medusa was never decorative in the conventional sense. He chose her deliberately — the figure from Greek mythology whose gaze arrested movement, whose face stopped people in their tracks. It was a statement about the power of beauty and the intention behind the brand. Combined with the Greek key, the meander pattern that runs through classical antiquity as a symbol of infinity and the eternal, these earrings are as much a philosophical declaration as they are jewelry. This is what Gianni Versace was doing in the early 1990s at the height of his influence, and why pieces from this period have become genuinely collectible.
The construction is substantial — these are not lightweight costume pieces. They move well and the drop length is long enough to register from across a room without overwhelming the face.
