Yves Saint Laurent Pavé Door-Knocker Earrings, 1980s

In 1961, Yves Saint Laurent commissioned A.M. Cassandre — one of the twentieth century's greatest graphic designers, the man behind the Normandie ocean liner poster and the Dubonnet advertisements — to design his house monogram. The interlocking YSL that Cassandre produced became one of the most recognized marks in fashion history. When it appears stamped on the interior clip mechanism of a pair of earrings, it is not a logo. It is a signature from a specific moment when the person whose initials those are was still deciding what those initials meant.

These door-knockers are the YSL jewelry vocabulary of the 1980s at its most fully realized. The form is architectural: a substantial pavé hoop suspended from a ribbed gold clip top via swivel attachment, allowing the hoop to move freely against the neck. The pavé crystals are hand-set across the entire hoop surface — dense, irregular, light-catching in the way that hand-setting produces and machine-setting cannot replicate. The ribbed clip top provides textural contrast that keeps the piece from reading as purely maximalist. There is structure underneath the sparkle.

The door-knocker silhouette was the definitive earring of the power dressing era — substantial, kinetic, designed to be seen from across a room. What distinguished the YSL version from the versions that appeared at every price point during this period was exactly this: hand-set stones, a swivel mechanism with genuine engineering, and the Cassandre monogram on the hardware. The difference between a YSL door-knocker and a generic door-knocker is the difference between a decision and a copy of a decision.
